sir,

With reference to your letter of the 12th September, F5904/160/10, regarding the alleged exportation of arms

from this country to China via the British Dominions and

Colonies, I am directed by the Board of Trade to state for

the information of Secretary Sir John Simon, that no

military arms may be exported from this country to the

Dominions or Colonies without an export licence. It is

the Board's practice to grant licences freely for the

exportation of sporting arms to such destinations, but

this policy is not followed in the case of war material,

and licences are not, in fact, issued for the exportation

of war material to private consignees in the Dominions

and Colonies.

The Board would, however, be glad to be furnished

with the fullest information, including the names of the

The Under-Secretary of State,

Foreign Office,

S.W. 1.
